A Mobile Social VR MMO for Music, Media, and Exploration.

Spaceout.VR was a mobile-first social VR experience designed to let users explore personalized virtual environments built from their favorite digital content. Developed during the early years of mobile VR, the platform reimagined how virtual worlds could be shaped by personal data, music, and social interaction—without requiring expensive headsets or high-end hardware.

At the core of Spaceout.VR was a simple but ambitious idea: every user gets their own Space Station—a floating virtual hub built from their connected media. Music from SoundCloud, photos from Facebook, places from Google Street View, videos from YouTube—all streamed in and reassembled into a custom experience. Each station was part bedroom, part portal, part social node in a massive shared VR network.

From there, users could “space out”—exploring thousands of other stations, chatting, leaving messages, sharing content, and meeting people through ambient discovery rather than algorithmic feeds. The platform blended 360° video, VR games, messaging, and music into a seamless interface that worked across iOS and Android using just a smartphone and headset.

To support this, we built a scalable back-end architecture capable of real-time data streaming and dynamic scene generation. Each user session pulled in live content, generated VR scenes procedurally, and stored preferences, friendships, and interactions as part of a persistent social graph. The in-app economy included unlockable features, Space Station upgrades, and premium content—all tied to user behavior and exploration.

The “Music Virtualizer” feature became one of the platform’s most popular elements. It let users experience music as a visual and spatial event—floating through reactive, beat-synced environments that changed with every track. It served as an entry point for younger users, who were looking for immersive experiences on mobile without the friction of PC-based VR.

From a UX perspective, we focused on minimizing technical overhead. Users could launch into VR with a single tap. Social mechanics were embedded in movement, not menus. Content was auto-curated from the user’s digital footprint, requiring little setup. This accessibility helped Spaceout.VR gain over 250,000 downloads and sustain a wide user base across both iOS and Android.

The platform also pioneered a monetization model optimized for early VR: a mix of in-app purchases, unlockable upgrades, and low-cost user acquisition. Our marketing strategy targeted teens and early adopters, while testing different content engagement models to drive retention.

Spaceout.VR was featured by Google VR and ran as a live product for over two years, during which we gained deep insight into mobile VR behavior, session patterns, and the social psychology of virtual presence. It remains one of our most ambitious experiments in shaping user-centered virtual space—and a foundational project in our understanding of how people explore, connect, and express identity in immersive environments.
