Face Recognition for Seamless Photo Tagging and Sharing.
Social Camera was an Android app built to simplify the way people tag and share photos—using facial recognition to identify friends, suggest names, and accelerate the sharing process across social networks. Developed in collaboration with Viewdle, the app applied real-time computer vision to an everyday mobile task, making photo management faster, smarter, and more personal.
Winner Best Mobile Entertainment App at CTIA (2011)
Before Social Camera, tagging people in photos was a slow, manual process—repeating the same steps across platforms, albums, and galleries. Our goal was to streamline it. The app allowed users to either take a new photo or select one from their device, and Social Camera would instantly detect and suggest tags based on previous face data. Each confirmed or corrected tag improved the app’s learning, helping it adapt to different angles, expressions, or lighting conditions over time.

The system was built around Viewdle’s proprietary face detection and tracking engine, which we integrated into an intuitive mobile UX. From detection to tagging to sharing, the flow was designed to happen in just a few taps. Suggested faces appeared with confidence ratings, and users could confirm, edit, or skip them. Once tagged, photos could be shared directly to platforms like Facebook and Flickr.
We also prioritized performance across Android devices, optimizing detection speed, memory usage, and camera access to ensure a smooth experience—even on lower-end phones. Users could control data permissions and face recognition settings, giving them agency over what was stored, suggested, or shared.
Viewdle was acquired by Google in 2012.
Privacy was central. Social Camera gave users full control over face data management, with clear options for local vs. cloud processing and tag approval. In an era when facial recognition was still new to consumers, we designed every interaction to feel transparent, responsive, and respectful.
The app won “Best Mobile Entertainment App” at CTIA in 2011, and stood out as one of the earliest examples of real-time face recognition applied in a consumer mobile context. For us, Social Camera was a chance to take advanced machine vision and deliver it in a way that felt casual, useful, and integrated into daily mobile behavior.
