Scoring for good
Motion-Controlled Football Game with Real-World Impact.
Motion-Controlled Football Game with Real-World Impact.
Scoring For Good is a mobile sports game that transforms your phone into a virtual football—using real-time motion data to simulate throws, track performance, and turn gameplay into social good. Designed as both an interactive experience and a fundraising platform, the project merged gesture-based gaming with a charitable mission in partnership with Camp Kesem, a nonprofit supporting children affected by a parent’s cancer.
The game uses your phone’s accelerometer and gyroscope to detect throwing motion. Players swing their device forward like a football, and the system calculates distance, arc, and accuracy using a physics-based simulation engine. Each throw launches a virtual ball through a stylized stadium, with visual feedback showing the flight path and final distance. Leaderboards let players compare results, challenge friends, and build competitive streaks over time.
Motion-based play with real-world impact.
But beyond gameplay, Scoring For Good connected each throw to a real-world purpose. In collaboration with NFL athletes—including 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith, Bills quarterback E.J. Manuel, and Redskins tackle Tyler Polumbus—the game tracked player stats and turned them into donations. Smith pledged $1,000 per sack to fund a child’s summer camp experience; users could match contributions based on in-game performance or tie their own donations to their throws.

The app was designed for Android with a lightweight architecture optimized for mobile sensors, featuring a clear UI, fast session loop, and in-app prompts to share, donate, and participate in the broader campaign. Social media integration encouraged players to challenge others via Twitter and compare stats—making the game both viral and socially meaningful.
It wasn’t just about distance—it was about connection.
Scoring For Good wasn’t just a novelty—it was a system for tying fun, physical play to real impact. It demonstrated how motion-driven mechanics, cause-based design, and athlete involvement could come together in a mobile package that felt light, purposeful, and memorable.
